Sarasota Lionfish Derby
Jul 6 – Jul 8 all-day

You’re invited to partner in the fifth annual Sarasota Lionfish Derby! This exciting and environmentally beneficial event will be hosted by Mote Marine Laboratory, a world-class marine science institution, in cooperation with Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), which helps study and address the lionfish invasion and sanctions official Lionfish Derbies.

Lionfish Derbies are an important way to harvest large numbers of this invasive species that has spread along the eastern Atlantic coast, Columbia to Escambia counties. Derbies help divers harvest lionfish and provide public education.

This year’s event will be based at Mote, with a captain’s meeting on July 6, lionfish hunting July 7 in the beautiful Gulf of Mexico — tournament boundaries are defined as Collier County to Escambia County — and the lionfish weigh-in July 8 at Mote Marine Laboratory. Cost to participate in the Derby is $120.00 per team (minimum 2 people per team, maximum 4 people). The public is invited to join Mote scientists and derby participants at the weigh-in for educational dissections and lionfish tastings on Sunday.  To sign up a team up, click the Register button to the right!

Halloween Safe Treats for Kids
Oct 31 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Calling all Trick or Treaters!! Ghosts, goblins, princesses, superheroes, all are welcome to venture to Siesta Key for the 33rd year of Siesta Key Safe Treats on Halloween, October 31st.

Little ones are invited to trick-or-treat on October 31st from 3pm to 6pm.

Participating businesses will have orange and black balloons outside their establishment and pumpkin flyers in their windows. Keep an eye out for treats for adults too:)

We are very excited this year because the hunt for candy has widened to include from Siesta Key Village on the North end of the island to also include merchants on South Siesta Key. You can stop into the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce to get a list of all participating establishments.

Wanna make it extra exciting and really fill up that treatbag? (In my days of trick-or-treating, we used pillowcases:O) Take a ghoulish trip around the island on the Siesta Breeze Trolley. It will be making loops between the Siesta Key Village and Turtle Beach, with multiple stops along the way. This is a great way to see all the local businesses on the island, meet some new people and get lots of candy and treats!!
