Sarasota Film Festival
Apr 13 – Apr 22 all-day

MovieMaker Magazine named SFF one of the Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World. Here’s what they had to say about us:

“One of a couple “regional” exemplars on our list, SFF pairs a sharp selection of new indies with throwbacks to classic Hollywood, like this spring’s guests Olympia Dukakis and Sophia Loren (and if it’s cool enough for Sophia, it’s cool enough for us). Programs also feature partnerships with non-profit Through Women’s Eyes, which presents female-driven films at SFF, as well as the LGBT-centered Harvey Milk Festival. Overall, SFF is “extremely accommodating,” says a panelist, who fondly remembers “a massive luncheon focusing on women filmmakers – we shared our experiences with one another and talked about our ‘secrets.'”

Featuring the Company Premiere of Antony Tudor’s The Leaves are Fading, the Company Premiere of George Balanchine’s Bugaku and Sir Frederick Ashton’s Marguerite and Armand. Performed with Live Music. Originally choreographed in 1975 on American Ballet Theatre, The Leaves are Fading is a romantic and sweeping ballet and one of Tudor’s purest dance works. In Judith Chazin-Bennahum’s book The Ballets of Antony Tudor, she describes the work as a “rhapsodic expression of couples in love” and a ballet that “re-established Tudor’s pre-eminent position as a great choreographer at American Ballet Theatre.” Alastair Macaulay of The New York Times exclaimed that “The Leaves Are Fading becomes a special elegy, an autumnal remembrance of multiple facets of young love when it is dewy but not intoxicated.” George Balanchine’s Tarantella is a nimble virtuosic showcase, and celebrates Principal Dancer Logan Learned 10 years with The Sarasota Ballet.

Siesta Fiesta 2018
Apr 28 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

The Fiesta was traditionally held in April and known as the last party of the “season,” until 2008 when the month of the event date was changed to February.

In 2009 the popular festival returned to its original late April dates, probably due to the mass amount of confusion generated by 2008’s date change and the outpouring of voices calling for it to return to its original date.

Usually, in years past, Ocean Boulevard was blocked off to traffic so participants in the festival as well as the general public could use the Village streets freely.

Tip: Parking can be a challenge as several of Siesta Key Village’s streets are blocked off and the free public parking lot nearby fills up fast. Best bet is to walk or bike down to Siesta Key Village from another location.

Admission to “the Fiesta” in Siesta Key Village is free. The weather is quite agreeable this time of year and the Village is only a couple blocks east of the Gulf of Mexico, so there can be some nice sea breezes as well as sunshine, making it a perfect time to enjoy the Fiesta!

Directions: From Sarasota take U.S. Rt.41 to the Stickney Point Bridge, over the bridge and then turn right on to Midnight Pass Road. Follow Midnight Pass road to Beach Road to Ocean Boulevard into Siesta Key Village and look for parking.v
